Venice - the very name conjures up images of Gondolas floating leisurely along The Grand Canal, complete with accordian player and opera singer. This is, indeed, one of the best ways to view this romantic city, located along the Venetian Coast of the upper Adriatic Sea. Yachting enthusiasts travel to this 3,700-mile strip of Venetian coastline for its near-perfect Mediterranean climate, lush mountain backdrop and sheltering coves and inlets. Venice itself is actually comprised of 118 small islands, with 400 bridges connecting its 160 canals. The only way to travel in the city is on foot or by boat – there are no cars or buses, and walking the city is quite safe at any hour of the day or night. The Piazza San Marco is the heart of Venice, and is usually filled with crowds, fluttering pigeons, and lined with outdoor cafes. Other attractions include Basilica of San Marco, one of the most beautiful churches in all of Europe and the incredible Accademia Gallery. A cruise across the shallow waters of the Venetian Lagoon takes you to several islands known for their handicrafts and churches. The Church of San Michele, built during the Renaissance, stands on its own island, and nearby is the island of Murano, the center of Venice’s famous glassware industry. Venice, as a yachting destination, is an extraordinary adventure, and it’s been said that it is “the undisputed Queen of the Adriatic Sea where early morning arrival by sea is an unforgettable experience.”
